What actually leaves the box

The box drains along predictable lines. Hair ties leave daily and never return. Gloves leave in winter, one at a time. Art smocks and bibs cycle through wash and come back, so their count holds. The mistake is stocking all three the same way, when only the first two are consumables.

A simple audit helps: whatever you restocked twice last year is a consumable, and consumables get bought by the hundred, not by the handful.

Counts that survive to June

For a room of twenty-five, a hundred-count of hair ties is a school year; a twenty-count is a semester at best. Gloves follow the attrition math of winter: a dozen one-size pairs covers the recess emergencies for a season. Sleep masks for quiet time and party pieces for the class calendar are event-driven, so they get counted per event with a ten percent spare.

Buying the year in one order beats topping up monthly, mostly because the March version of the box never gets restocked at all.

One color saves the argument

Anything handed out in a classroom works better in one color. Identical pieces distribute in seconds and remove the comparison entirely. Assorted packs have their place in prize boxes, where picking a color is the point, but the everyday spares box runs smoother in bulk black or bulk clear.

For events, flip the rule: one color per table or per group, assigned before the pack is opened.

Label the count on the lid

Write the starting count and the date on the box lid. When the box gets thin, the lid tells you how long the count lasted, and next year you order from data instead of memory. It is a thirty second habit that turns the box from a mystery into a system.
